A timeless, hearty sandwich featuring thick-cut bologna seared until perfectly crisp, layered with gooey cheese, tangy condiments, and nestled between buttery golden bread slices. Ideal for a quick lunch or satisfying dinner, this savory classic offers both comfort and bold flavor in every bite.
4slicesof sandwich loaf bread — whitewheat, or brioche
4 to 6pickled cucumber chipsfor added texture (optional)
Instructions
Generously coat one side of each bread slice with the softened butter and set them aside for assembly.
Preheat a skillet over medium heat. Lay the bologna slices flat in the pan. Sear for approximately 2 to 3 minutes per side, until they take on a golden hue and the edges begin to curl. If the centers bubble, lightly scoring a cross in the middle helps prevent puffing.
To build the sandwich, place two slices of the browned bologna on the unbuttered side of one bread slice (ensuring the buttered side faces outward). Lay one slice of cheese over the bologna, then layer with two more pieces of the fried meat. Add pickle chips for extra crunch, if desired.
Spread mayonnaise and mustard across the unbuttered side of the second bread slice, then position it on top to close the sandwich, buttered side facing outward.
Return the assembled sandwich to the skillet and toast for 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until the bread is crisped to a golden finish and the cheese has fully melted.
Slice in half and serve immediately while warm.
Notes
Feel free to adjust the level of condiments or choose your preferred bread and cheese variety for slight variations in flavor.
